PLA vs PETG: which material should your part be printed in?
We print in PLA and PETG because between them they cover almost every job well. They behave differently though, and picking the right one is the difference between a part that lasts years and one that warps on a sunny windowsill. Here is the honest comparison we give customers.
PLA — the everyday material
PLA is the economical, easy-printing choice and comes in the widest range of colours. It is rigid, holds fine detail well, and is the right call for most indoor and decorative parts.
- Best for: decor, prototypes, organisers, plaques, models and indoor fittings
- Rigid and dimensionally accurate, with a clean surface finish
- Weakness: softens around 60 °C, so a car dashboard or a spot in direct summer sun can deform it
- More brittle than PETG — it snaps rather than flexes under sharp impact
PETG — the tougher option
PETG costs a little more and is worth it when a part has to survive heat, sunlight or mechanical stress. It is the usual choice for functional and outdoor parts.
- Best for: brackets, mounts, garden and outdoor parts, workshop tooling, anything load-bearing
- Handles heat better than PLA and resists UV and moisture far better
- Slightly flexible, so it absorbs knocks instead of cracking
- Weakness: a little less crisp on very fine detail, and a narrower colour range

- Is PETG stronger than PLA?
- PETG is tougher — it flexes instead of snapping and handles heat and sun far better. PLA is stiffer and holds fine detail better, which suits decorative and indoor parts.
- Can PLA be used outdoors?
- For short periods or shaded spots it can survive, but direct summer sun and heat will warp it. For anything living outdoors we recommend PETG.
- Is there a big price difference?
- PETG costs a little more per part. The difference on a typical small part is modest, and we quote both materials when it matters.
- Which has more colours?
- PLA, by a wide margin. If colour choice is the priority and the part stays indoors, PLA is usually the answer.
